HEARTWORM POSITIVE DOGS

DIXIE'S JOURNEY

This poor momma and her six puppies were found by animal control officers wandering the streets and rummaging through trash. Unfortunately the shelter was full and was not able to adopt out this family due to their breed. The entire family was infested with fleas and skinny with wormy bellies. They needed out of the shelter ASAP! We could not leave sweet mama and her babies to die.

Upon pickup we noticed Dixie and her puppies had skin concerns. We rushed them to the vet to see if they had mange and if they needed to start treatment. Thankfully their scrape was negative and the hair loss was due to flea allergies. The puppies and mom were bathed, received flea, tick & heartworm prevention and were vaccinated.  Sadly, the vet did discover Dixie was heartworm positive during her exam.

Heartworm disease is a serious and potentially fatal disease. It is caused by up to foot-long worms (heartworms) that live in the heart, lungs and associated blood vessels of affected pets. This causes severe lung disease, heart failure and damage to other organs in the body if left untreated. Heartworm disease causes many potential adopters to pass a dog by due to the costly treatment.

Heartworm sponsorships help heartworm positive dogs live their lives to the fullest and find their forever home! Heartworm treatment starts at $500 however any amount helps!
